USS John S. McCain DDG-56 was named in honor of Admiral John S. McCain Sr. and Admiral John S. McCain Jr., this Arleigh Burke-class, Aegis guided missile destroyer is the third commissioned warship to carry the name "John S. McCain."
USS John S. McCain (DDG 56): At sea aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) Jan. 26, 2003 -- The guided missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) approaches the USS Kitty Hawk during a replenishment at sea (RAS). Kitty Hawk is the Navy’s only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier and operates out of Yokosuka, Japan.
USS John S. McCain is home ported in Yokosuka, Japan, is a member of the U.S. Seventh Fleet's forward deployed naval forces (FDNF). Its keel was laid down on September 3, 1991 at the Bath Iron Works (BIW) in Bath, Maine and was eventually launched on September 26, 1992, sponsored by Cindy McCain, wife of Senator McCain. The USS John S. McCain was commissioned on July 2, 1994 at Bath Iron Works and former President George H. W. Bush, was the ceremony's principal speaker.
On 16 February 2007, John S. McCain was awarded the 2006 Battle "E" award.
