Check: to slack off slowly; to stop a vessel's way gradually by a line fastened to some fixed object or to an anchor on the bottom; to ease off a rope a little, especially with a view to reducing the tension; to stop or regulate the motion, as a cable when it is running too fast (The Coast Guardsman's Manual).
