15/05/2006 -- Dorset’s luxury motoryacht manufacturer Sunseeker International is sponsoring the 18th Macmillan Cancer Relief Dorset Bike Ride on Sunday 2 July 2006. The company has contributed £1,000 and has a team of cyclists entered into the event to help raise more funds for the charity. As part of the £600,000 appeal for Dorset, the event aims to raise over £38,000 - last year’s total.According to the event organiser Peter Smith-Nicholls, 100% of the money raised by cyclists goes directly to Macmillan Cancer Relief projects.
‘The Macmillan Cancer Relief Dorset Bike Ride is organised and run by volunteers. We value and depend on the generosity of all our supporters particularly Sunseeker International. Hence we encourage as full support as possible to continue to make this ride such a fund raising success’ he said.
A team of Sunseeker cyclists led by Wayne Moore, Head of Manufacturing will choose between the 15, 25, 40 and 60 mile courses and pedal there way along the Dorset lanes. Commenting on the company’s support, Sunseeker’s managing director Robert Braithwaite MBE said: ‘Our commitment to locally-based charities forms part of the company’s approach to social citizenship and supporting the local community. This appeal will help fund some very worthwhile projects aimed at providing much needed relief, support and mobility to patients suffering from cancer. We hope our involvement will help encourage others to support and take part in the event, and raise even more funds for the charity.’
The Dorset Bike Ride was started in 1989 by Peter Smith Nicholls, the year after he cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End following the death of his father from cancer. The Dorset Bike Ride is Peter''s way of continuing the fund raising he started on that End to End bike ride. Forty people took part in the first ride and raised £2,500. The event now attracts in the region of 600 cyclists.
